Membership in SISTN shall be in the following ascending order of grades: Student, Pre-Professional, Professional, Associate, Fellow. The following definitions have been adopted by SISTN for the purposes of membership registration.
Information Science and Technology industry:
This includes the following and related disciplines, professions and occupations - Archives Studies/Management, Communication Arts/Science, Computer Science, Information Management, Information Science, Information Services, Information Systems, Information Technology, Innovation Management, Library Management, Library Science, Media Science, Media Studies, Records Management, Research and Development Management, Science and Technology Information, Telecommunications.
Tertiary-level education qualifications:
These include bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, higher national diplomas, national certificates of education, and high level specialised professional information industry certifications endorsed by SISTN, and their equivalents.
A person may apply for admission to the Student Member grade of SISTN provided he/she has an interest in the work of SISTN and is registered in a formal training programme in a tertiary education institution or in a professional certification programme in the field of Information Science and Technology as defined above. Student Members are required to upgrade to the appropriate higher status membership category one year after completion of the training. Student Members shall pay annual membership dues. Student Members are not entitled to use any letters after their name to indicate their membership grade. A Student Member does not hold office and does not vote. Student Members receive copies of e-magazines and e-newsletters of SISTN, reduced registration fees for SISTN meetings and discounted subscription rates for SISTN journals. An applicant for Student Member grade shall provide a letter of attestation of the applicant’s studentship status written on the headed paper of the relevant tertiary institution, and the institution shall be contacted to validate the letter. The letter must contain the following information: name of applicant, institution and program/department name, postal and email address and official phone of the institution, and date of program completion, contact name and address of sponsor, and attestation.
A person, who may not have been previously a Student Member of SISTN, may apply for admission to the Associate Member grade of SISTN provided he/she has indicated interest in the work of SISTN and had obtained a tertiary-level qualification of not lower than Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma relevant to occupation or professional practice in any aspect of the Information Science and Technology industry. An Associate Member may apply for upgrade of status to Professional Member once he obtains the qualifications required of a Professional Member. An Associate Member shall pay annual membership dues, receive copies of e-magazines and e-newsletters of SISTN, and benefit from reduced registration fees for SISTN meetings and reduced subscription rates for SISTN journals. An Associate Member does not hold office and does not vote. Associate Members are entitled to use the letters ASISTN (Associate of the Society for Information Science and Technology of Nigeria) after their names.
A person may apply for admission to the Professional Member grade of SISTN provided he/she has indicated interest in the work of SISTN and had either obtained a tertiary-level qualification of not lower than master’s degree relevant to occupation or professional practice in any aspect of the Information Science and Technology industry. Professional members shall pay annual membership dues, vote on general Society business, may hold office or committee chairmanships, may sit on committees, and may vote on committee matters. Professional Members receive all publications of SISTN, and are not exempt from participation fees in any SISTN activity. Professional Members are entitled to use the letters PSISTN (Professional Member of the Society for Information Science and Technology of Nigeria) after their names.
The SISTN Fellow grade is given to a person in honorary recognition of his/her lifetime professional or supportive contribution to the development of the Information Science and Technology disciplines, professions, occupations or industry in Nigeria or any other African country. A Professional Member may apply for upgrade of membership status to SISTN Fellow, provided he/she has attained the age of 45 years, and had been active in the information industry and related sectors for at least 10 years. Persons who do not satisfy the above requirements may be recommended for special admission to SISTN Fellow membership by the Executive Committee of SISTN to the Board of SISTN Fellows which approves and admits new SISTN Fellows. SISTN Fellows shall pay annual membership dues. SISTN Fellows do not vote on general SISTN business, do not hold office or committee chairmanships, but may sit on committees and may vote on committee matters. Fellows receive all publications of SISTN, and are entitled to use the letters FSISTN (Fellow of the Society for Information Science and Technology of Nigeria) after their names.
